Citizenship Application

Apply for Singapore Citizenship

Becoming a Singapore Citizen is a major milestone for many Permanent Residents who wish to build their long-term future here. Beyond enjoying greater stability, Singapore Citizenship offers access to a wide range of benefits, including stronger family security, better education opportunities for children, and a deeper sense of belonging in one of the world’s most liveable countries.

That said, the citizenship application process can be highly selective. Approval is based on more than just how long you have stayed in Singapore — factors such as your employment profile, family background, local contributions, and overall integration into society may all play a role in the final outcome. Without proper preparation, even seemingly strong applications may face delays or rejection.

At Immigration SG, we understand how important this step is for you and your family. Our experienced consultants are here to guide you through the process, from evaluating your profile to preparing a clear and well-presented application that reflects your strengths.

-Spouses of Singapore Citizens (with at least 2 years of PR and 2 years of marriage).

No. Singapore strictly does not allow dual citizenship for adults. If your application is successful, you must provide evidence that you have renounced your foreign citizenship before you can take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty (ORAL) and receive your Singapore Identity Card and Passport.
The SCJ is a mandatory programme for all successful applicants aged 16 to 60. It must be completed after receiving your In-Principle Approval (IPA). The journey includes: -Online E-learning modules about Singapore’s history and norms. -A half-day tour of historical and national landmarks. -A Community Sharing Session to meet fellow residents and grassroots leaders.
On average, the ICA takes 6 to 12 months to process a citizenship application. For children born overseas to Singaporean parents, the process is usually faster (around 2-3 months). Factors such as document completeness and the complexity of background checks can affect this timeline.

The ICA evaluates applicants holistically. Beyond basic eligibility, they look at:

-Economic Contribution: Your employment stability, income, and tax records.

-Social Integration: Your ability to blend into Singapore’s multicultural society and community involvement.

-Family Profile: Whether your family is also rooted in Singapore.

-Educational Background: Your qualifications and skills that can contribute to the nation’s growth.

If your son obtains citizenship as a minor or through your sponsorship, he will be required to register for NS upon reaching 16½ years old and will usually be enlisted at 18.

If your application is rejected, you can file an appeal or wait for 12 to 24 months before reapplying.
During this period, it is crucial to enhance your profile—such as by achieving a promotion, increasing your salary, or demonstrating deeper community involvement. We recommend a professional review of your previous submission to identify and address any potential gaps before your next attempt.

However, if you plan to be out of Singapore for an extended period (e.g., more than 3 months), it is advisable to inform the ICA to ensure you do not miss any important interview requests or document updates.
