Are you ready to take the first step in applying for your Permanent Residence (PR)? First, let’s take a look at your eligibility.
As a foreigner, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence (PR) if you are a/an:
Spouses and any unmarried children below 21 years old (born within the context of a legal marriage or legally adopted) of a Singapore Citizen/ Permanent Resident may apply for PR.
Aged parents of a Singapore Citizen may submit an application for PR.
Any person working in Singapore on an Employment Pass or S Pass may submit an application for PR. The application may include their spouse and any unmarried children aged below 21 years born to them within the context of a legal marriage or has been legally adopted by them.
International students studying in Singapore may submit an application for PR. They must have resided in Singapore for more than two years at the point of application.
You can apply for Singapore PR if you are willing to invest in the country and support your funds with proven entrepreneurial skills.

For foreigners considering Singapore as their permanent home, getting your PR is the first step towards citizenship. You will be eligible to apply for full Singapore citizenship after at least two years of permanent residence status and enjoy the same rights as locally-born citizens. Once you become a citizen, you can enjoy visa-free access to 189 countries around the world. The Singapore passport is one of the most powerful in the world.
One of the best things you can do as a Singapore PR is to live and work in Singapore without applying for another visa. Work pass holders almost always encounter some restrictions in terms of job opportunities. As a result, the number of job opportunities available for work pass holders is limited. You can also enter and leave the country during your holiday because you don’t have to worry about being held in the immigration.
You can explore more jobs freely without reapplying for a separate work visa, unlike holding a work pass. There’s also a risk of being rejected in the work pass application. So, getting your PR is the best option you have if you want to explore more career opportunities in Singapore. Not only that, most of the companies in Singapore prefer to hire locals and PR due to the foreign quota limit.
Singapore’s education system has been consistently ranked as one of the highest in the world; that’s why many international students prefer to study here. They are willing to pay whatever it takes to get into a Singapore school.
By becoming a PR, you can take advantage of the education subsidies offered by the government. You can also enroll your children in public schools, and the tuition fees are much more affordable than international students. While children of EP and S Pass holders usually go to international schools where the fees are high.
Singapore’s healthcare services are one of the best in the world; it consists of excellent medical care, great facilities and experienced professionals. In 2020, the Bloomberg Health-Efficiency Index, which tracks life expectancy and medical spending, ranked Singapore first in the world for the most efficient healthcare.
Becoming a PR will also entitle you to government healthcare subsidies and hospitalization. The government subsidizes hospital fees in public healthcare but ensures it provides excellent facilities.
Another great benefit of becoming a PR is the ability to sponsor your family to stay with you in Singapore. You can apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) with your immediate family members which enables them to stay with you longer. By holding an LTVP, they can even live and work in Singapore without applying for a separate work pass. They just need to obtain a Letter of Consent from ICA.
They can also apply for PR provided they’ve already stayed in Singapore for a minimum of 2 years.
Once you become a Singapore PR, you will also be entitled to the Central Provident Fund (CPF). It is a savings and pension plan for working Singaporeans and permanent residents primarily to fund your retirement, healthcare, and housing needs in Singapore.
Citizens and PRs can enjoy buying HDB apartments. HDB flats are government-subsidized housing units sold by the Housing & Development Board (HDB). It is also easier to get various loans, such as a housing loan to buy property.
